I doubt very much Sir Edmund would have had a problem getting sponsorship for all his undertakings given his achievements. And he wrote many books, and maybe back then authors earned more money than they do now (ha!). As for the philanthropy, I it would be sponsors again.

The average cost per person these days to climb Everest with a commercial trekking company is around $80-100k so getting a sponsor is a good idea unless you've won the lottery. Although, it's a lot easier to get a sponsor if you're doing a "first" milestone rather than something a lot of others have done (I'm diminishing the amazing effort it takes to climb Everest by any means, it's just that sponsors want to be involved with "firsts" these days).

I contemplated Cho Oyu (one of the eight tallest peaks in the world) years ago as no other Aussie female had successfully scaled it, but sponsorship was hard to get. And then someone beat me to it! I was lucky enough to work with his son as part of some work in the 90s and my impression is he is very much like his father (and he is heavily involved in community work also).Alli Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00363202163419352155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-21481051695037059802012-01-17T16:45:33.958-05:002012-01-17T16:45:33.958-05:00Such an interesting profile! Who pays you to climb a mountain? Even the philanthropy? Is it from his famous name that he was just able to raise capital to fund these projects and also raise his family etc? Yes, I'm all about the practicalities. ;)Supriya Savkoorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10854983392374596718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-3426725201424510752012-01-17T16:23:50.378-05:002012-01-17T16:23:50.378-05:00...
