The two that came to mind immediately were Arthur Golden’s "Memoirs of a Geisha" (which I carried with me like a guidebook when I went to Japan to see where the old Geisha quarters used to be) and "The Harlot High and Low" by Honore de Balzac. Do you see the common trend? I do :)Lina Zeldovichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04258464515913616152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-26977536230220675122010-10-13T00:38:32.471-04:002010-10-13T00:38:32.471-04:00Yep, Heidi, I hear ya! I'm always taking them out again and promising myself I'll find another story for them someday. Poor little orphans.

Dave ~, did you really get 2 books out of a 9-word idea? I love how that works.Alli Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00363202163419352155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-85517145530612683212010-10-12T23:41:27.228-04:002010-10-12T23:41:27.228-04:00Yep, travel IS one of the best. Love Isabel Allende too. I usually find my spark from a single person i meet or an obsure detail that then becomes the central themeKarsten Hornehttp://www.reho.travelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-81752692734823267222010-10-12T23:09:54.202-04:002010-10-12T23:09:54.202-04:00Where do ideas come from?

I have books filled with random thoughts. One 9 word note turned into two (thankfully) unpublished novels.

Where do ideas come from? Wherever your mind is allowed to roam. I just googled him and realised he writes the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I've heard a lot of great things about these books - now I really must read them! Great suggestion, Sandy!Alli Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00363202163419352155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-82493890721889378752010-10-12T20:29:04.815-04:002010-10-12T20:29:04.815-04:00Nice post, Alli. Alexander McCall Smith is another writer (though not of magical realism) who uses small details to bring a story to life.Sandy Codyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02824301408180614516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-80404366983976387432010-10-12T16:44:52.041-04:002010-10-12T16:44:52.041-04:00Thanks, Kathy!

I think it's because I've read so many South American authors that write magical realism it just flows into my own writing.Alli Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00363202163419352155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8018311341701044333.post-33133068213843803572010-10-12T13:12:44.068-04:002010-10-12T13:12:44.068-04:00Well, since you asked, my favorite novels typicall...Well, since you asked, my favorite novels typically don't make me feel like the main character but rather like a fly on the wall.
